Hello, writers!
In today’s dynamic publishing landscape, being an author is no longer just about writing great stories. It’s about becoming an entrepreneur who can navigate the complexities of self-publishing or hybrid publishing. Whether you’re self-publishing or working with a traditional publisher, the entrepreneurial skills you develop will be crucial to your success.
Why Authors Need Entrepreneurial Skills
In the modern publishing world, authors must wear many hats. The role of an author extends beyond writing to include marketing, branding, and business management. Adopting an entrepreneurial mindset is essential:
Self-Publishing and Hybrid Publishing Demands
For self-published and hybrid authors, the responsibility for your book’s success rests largely on your shoulders. This means:
- Establishing and maintaining a strong author brand is critical. This includes creating a cohesive image and messaging that resonates with readers.
- Effective self-promotion and marketing strategies are essential to reach your target audience and build a loyal reader base.
- From financial management to understanding legal aspects, handling the business side of publishing is a significant part of the process.
Developing Essential Skills
To thrive as an entrepreneurial author, you’ll need to cultivate a range of skills. Here are some key areas to focus on:
1. Branding and Marketing
- Learn how to build and promote your personal brand, create engaging content for social media, and implement effective marketing strategies.
- Explore online courses on platforms like Coursera, Udemy, or LinkedIn Learning. Books like Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller can also provide valuable insights. I of course also have my own Branding & Marketing workshop on our Heartbeat platform for authors.
2. Business Management
- Understand the basics of financial management, including budgeting, accounting, and handling royalties. Additionally, knowledge of contracts and legal rights is crucial. I learned about contracts from working with agents and a lawyer friend. Studying existing contracts is beneficial. You’ll find downloadable samples on writers’ associations like the HWA, SFWA, or MWA. It takes time, but with experience, you will start to understand contracts.
- Consider taking online business courses or attending workshops focused on small business management. Websites like Khan Academy and Harvard Online offer relevant courses.
3. Networking and Relationship Building
- Building a network of contacts in the publishing industry and connecting with other authors, influencers, and potential readers can significantly impact your success.
- Join writing groups, attend industry events, and participate in online forums. Networking platforms like LinkedIn can also be helpful.
4. Technology and Digital Tools
- Familiarize yourself with digital tools for writing, editing, publishing, and marketing. This includes understanding platforms for eBook formatting and distribution.
- Look for tutorials and guides on specific tools and software. Sites like YouTube and tech blogs often offer detailed how-tos. Stay up to date with the latest technologies or you will find yourself on the outside pretty soon.
Setting Yourself on the Right Path
Becoming an entrepreneurial author involves a continuous learning process. Start by identifying the skills you need to develop and seek out resources that can help you grow in those areas. Embrace the challenge and view it as an opportunity to expand your horizons and enhance your career. By equipping yourself with the right skills and knowledge, you’ll be better prepared to navigate the complexities of modern publishing and take control of your writing career.
