Hello, fellow storytellers and aficionados of the eerie and the uncanny!
Joe Mynhardt here from Crystal Lake. Today, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news with you. I’m currently penning a book on writing, specifically tailored for authors who dare to delve into the dark and mysterious realms of horror. This project is a significant part of our upcoming Shadows & Ink platform launch on Heartbeat, and I can’t wait to bring you all on this spine-tingling journey with me.
Why Write a Book on Horror Writing?
Horror has always been a genre that fascinates and terrifies in equal measure. It’s a space where we confront our deepest fears, explore the unknown, and challenge the boundaries of our imagination. My love for this genre and my experience in writing and storytelling have inspired me to create a resource that can guide and nurture new talent in the field of horror writing.
The Art of Crafting Horror
The book I’m working on isn’t just a manual; it’s a deep dive into the art of crafting stories that chill and thrill. We’ll explore the nuances of building suspense, creating compelling characters, and setting scenes that linger in the mind long after the last page is turned. From the subtle art of psychological horror to the adrenaline rush of a well-placed jump scare, we’ll cover it all. And yes, I am involving other experts in the field.
Here are a few key areas we’ll explore in the book:
- Foundations of Horror & Dark Fiction: We’ll start with the basics—the history, sub-genres, and key elements that make horror what it is.
- Techniques to Master: Red Herrings, Chekhov’s Gun, Foreshadowing, and more—the tools you need to keep your readers on the edge of their seats.
- Character Development & Setting: Learn how to create characters that resonate and settings that set the tone for your narrative.
- Plotting & Pacing: Structuring your story for maximum impact, ensuring that every twist and turn drives the story forward.
- The Writer’s Life: From the ups and downs of being an author to marketing and promotion—we cover the journey beyond the writing.
Shadows & Ink is more than just a book; it’s a platform where horror writers can learn, grow, and connect. Our objective is to build a community where ideas are shared, creativity is nurtured, and new voices in horror are discovered and celebrated. The book itself will contain link (QR codes in the paperback) to bonus lessons, videos, downloads, and workshops by myself or others on the Heartbeat platform. The upsell at the very end? A mastermind group that I’ll personally run.
Your Voice Matters:

Can’t. Wait.
This sounds fantastic 🙂
Horror tropes…I have a book that strictly goes over the different tropes horror authors have used. It discusses the tropes and how they are used by giving specific instances. I just get confused as to how to include them without being too cliche.
It would be great to see how an author can expand on a single story idea to create a detailed outline/synopsis.
On it. I’ll write up something for next week.
